Today marks the third birthday of our partners and one of London's finest independent booksellers, the Big Green Bookshop. Launched in 2007, the BGB is run by Simon, Tim and Mark, three passionate, loopy and genuinely brilliant blokes.
The past fortnight has been huge for the BGB. On Thursday, Feb 24, Simon posted an article on the shop's blog about how, in no uncertain terms, they were in trouble. A double whammy of overbearing bank loans and fewer books being sold meant that the BGB could go under before the end of the year. It inspired an unprecendented show of support. The response to his cry for help was phenomonal. Crowds flocked to the BGB in their hundreds and coverage of the shop's plight soon followed in the trade papers and national press.
Simon has been posting updates on his blog since his initial missive and thanks to people's generosity and willingness to buy their books from the BGB, the shop is now well on its way to surviving the year ahead. However, that hasn't stopped Simon, Tim and Mark this week announcing an extra push and asking people to supplement their books purchases by one. Buy an extra book this week, either in person or on-line, at the BGB and you will be making a huge contribution to keeping one of London's most important bookshops alive and kicking.
